BISHOPS COURT (Devon)
0.5m SW of Ottery St Mary.
Course description courtesy of Anthony Howe
Only one meeting a year but arguably the best track in the south west – certainly none provides better viewing in attractive surroundings. The course is owned by octogenarian, Oliver Carter and his presence in his official white coat adds to the atmosphere – you will not see much litter (if any) at Ottery as Oliver makes regular personal checks on this! Woe- betide any litter dropper that he catches in the act! A very popular left handed course for owners and spectators alike – decent size fences, too.

Course description courtesy of Anthony Howe
Two excellent meets each season at this rejuvenated former national hunt track. Course is right handed and usually the going is very good. On the favoured side of the moor, it is often warmer at Buckfastleigh than at other courses situated just off the moor. Always good racing here and Lord Atterbury won here some 18 months before going on to be third in the National – good viewing and highly recommended!

Course description courtesy of Anthony Howe
This Dartmoor course is the twin to Kilworthy and they lie almost opposite each other and close to Tavistock. There is a downhill part of the course that some have said can be jarring if the going is firm but usually there is more than enough rain in this part of the world. Course is left handed and provides fair viewing. A bit more sheltered than Kilworthy and not quite such an exposed position – viewing is OK.

Course description courtesy of Anthony Howe
(about 2 and a half miles from Modbury, Devon) Undulating course in a beautiful and historic location. The parkland setting is associated with Flete House – the ancestral home of Lord Mildmay – legendary champion amateur of the 1930’s. The Mildmay of Flete is named after him at the Cheltenham Festival Meeting. Two meetings a year and not nearly enough runners in the last two or three seasons resulting in easy pickings for owners. A wonderful experience is a visit to a meeting at Flete Park and worth the effort to travel.

Excellent early season course with turf that drains well so rarely heavy ground. Undulating but very inviting fences with many positioned so that horses are jumping uphill and off their hocks. Reckoned to be a good introductory course for a novice and although quite demanding in terms of stamina, tow and a half mile maidens have been introduced for younger horses – good viewing but can be cold so wrap up warmly.

Course description courtesy of Anthony Howe
Situated close to the attractive old market town of Tavistock, this left handed track is a stayer’s course. The old turf rarely becomes too hard but after a lot of rain the going can become deep and holding in places. A fair galloping course with reasonable viewing (not much by way of stalls or facilities) but wrap up warm as it can be very cold.

You will be most unlikely to find soft or heavy on this right handed, flat and sharpish track. In the better races, they do not hang about and this can be a very fast track – not an easy course for riders to make up ground so the speed merchants tend to prevail. Viewing is awful and the landrover roof is about the best option! Difficult to hear the commentary on one side of the course so if you cannot see and cannot hear, you need a good imagination to visit!

Course description courtesy of Anthony Howe
Worth visiting for the celebratory end of season atmosphere. The Welsh always come in numbers and add to the competeitive and celebratory spirit of the occasion. A left-handed and undulating course which provides ample opportunity for run outs along the bottom straight. A poor viewing course and although quite long established the end of season swansong is worthy of a better course. The going can be very firm in a dry year but the organisers do go to immense trouble to present what is not the best of courses.

WADEBRIDGE (Cornwall)
At Royal Cornwall Showground, 1m W of town nr A39
Course description courtesy of Anthony Howe
Early season meetings take place here and usually this is the kick off for the West Country season. The course is fairly sharp and is situated a couple of miles outside the town of Wadebridge (take Padstow road) on the permanent showground for the Royal Cornwall Show. Not a pretty course but advantages include a good paddock area and undercover bookmakers and refreshments with seated areas. The tricky part of this left handed course is a quite steep and long downhill descent. Several horses each year hang left back to the boxes and with the downhill momentum contributing they miss the markers and run off the course.
