Knutsford Races Club at Tabley
Sunday 22nd May 2016
by Rory Alkin

The Knutsford Races at Tabley on Sunday had some good competitive racing on rain softened ground, with the weather brightening up during the afternoon after an early downpour. The feature race The North West Classic Final for The Lord Daresbury Cup only attracted four runners from an initial entry of eight and the prolific mare Fruit Fayre bided her time to take it up at the third last and pull right away from the front-running Niki Royal to win in a canter. The race itself worth £1500 was started two seasons ago to replace the Bangor NW Area Hunter Chase Final and the meeting organisers will be looking at ways to frame the conditions of the race to attract more runners in future years.

The Mixed Open was run over the shorter 2 ½ miles and attracted a good entry from far and wide. Joe Hill held up the favourite King's Legacy and eased his way to the lead after the second last going on to win by six lengths from Theodore Lamb. The winner owned and trained by the jockey's father Alan has had a successful wind operation and now that his confidence has been restored he will move to the professional yard of Alan's wife Lawney for a summer chasing campaign.

The opening PPORA Club Members Race for 10 year olds and upwards saw Lilly Pinchin go clear on Kilcross Boy on the final circuit only to tire turning into the straight, but the combination found extra on the run in when challenged by Abbie McCain on Mattara at the last and stayed on to win by 2 ½ lengths. The 11 year old winner was bought by trainer Ray Owen for his Tyrnog Racing Partnership at Ascot Sales last November for 600 guineas.

In the Novice Riders race, the Tommy Morgan trained favourite Lough Inch contested the lead for most of the journey but had no answer to the sustained challenge of Fred Timmis on Western Promise who led at the second last and won by three lengths. The winner was acquired in Ireland last year for the Lyggon Lott Partnership and is trained by Stacey Whitehead.

Dynamo Frankie ridden by Zak Baker took it up from long-time leader Sisco Kid in the Restricted and won easily by 12 lengths. The winner which was acquired in Ireland privately two years ago was a welcome first one this season for Martin and Jane Wanless who had a bad virus in the stable all last year.

In the concluding Maiden, Ed Glassonbury and Modulus, who were unlucky here at the recent Cheshire Forest meeting unseating in a clear lead three out, won a well-contested race by a length from Liz's Spirit with Tidy Dancer a head away in third place. The winner was bought by Oliver Greenall at the May 2015 Doncaster Sales for Warrington-based owner Stuart Parkin having had good bumper form. This was jockey Ed Glassonbury's second training success since taking over the point to point yard at Oliver Greenall's last month.
