Bilsdale at Easingwold
Sunday 8th May 2016

by Charlotte Russell

A hot and sunny day set the backdrop to the Bilsdale point-to-point at Easingwold on Sunday 8th May, bringing large crowds to watch seven races run on ground that was described as good, good to firm in places. The first race, the Bilsdale Hunt race, sponsored by Mr and Mrs Barton was a walk over for Cousin Guillaume, ridden by Joe Wright and the pair lined up again later in the day in the restricted race.

The first competitive race was a maiden for four, five and six year olds sponsored by Prodrive Shopfitting Ltd. Uncharacteristically late in the season, Jonagold provided a first win for trainer Nicky Tinkler who was making his seasonal debut and is also owned by Nicky. Following two falls last season, Jonagold's win was very impressive leading from the outset and jumping well throughout. He was followed closely by Grove Mountain, ridden by Will Milburn who finished in second by six lengths and Midnight in Venice was a further 10 lengths behind in third for Nick Orpwood.

Studford Luxury Lodges sponsored the 10 year olds and over PPORA Club Members Conditions Race, for horses that have not won under rules or an open point-to-point since 1st June 2014. Pertemps Networks made it three in a row when landing this for John Dawson, following up his win at the course a fortnight ago. The pair won easily enough from Know The Rules and Richard Smith with Tasheba and Amy Collier 10 lengths further back in third.

The Cleveland Security Ltd Mixed Open Race was the fastest race of the day and Billing landed the spoils, making the journey south worthwhile for jockey Nick Orpwood. Rosie Du Berlais had looked dangerous under Christy Furness but Billing managed to assert by eight lengths. Soleil D'Avril came home in third for William Easterby.

It was a day to remember for Fionn McSharry who rode her first winner in the Calverts Carpets Yorkshire Area Point-to-Point Club Members Riders Conditions Race where jockeys who are not novice riders had to carry a 5lb penalty. Fionn took advantage of her novice status to fly up the run in and snatch victory from the jaws of Drom and Emma Todd, belying their odds of 33 to 1. Drill Sergeant finished in third for Emma Horner-Harker.

Eight runners turned out for the Yorkshire Home Search Ltd Restricted Race and this provided the second win in a week for jockey Andrew Glass who partnered Oaklands Elise to another big priced victory. He was neck and neck up the run in with Anddante and John Dawson but just managed to assert at the line. Asheanymoney had been close up but finished eight lengths further back under Jacqueline Coward.

The final race of the day was the Oakley Horseboxes Open Maiden Race and See Mores Finale who has been knocking on the door this season finally got his head in front for Ross Wilson. Another to lead from pillar to post, he was chased all the way by Lady Nefertiti and Harry Kinder and this pair had pulled well clear of the other two runners, with Carols Memory a further forty lengths behind for Andrew Glass.

The Yorkshire season finishes next Saturday with the South Durham meeting at Howe Hills, Mordon.
