Hurworth at Hutton Rudby
Saturday 19th March 2016

by Charlotte Russell

Jacqueline Coward continued her winning ways at the Hurworth Point-to-Point on Saturday by recording another double. Her first win came in the Subaru restricted race on The Highlander. The pair made all from start to finish and had no trouble fending off any challenges up the run in. "He jumped beautifully," enthused Cherry Coward, the winning jockey's mother, "he jumps big fences well," she added. Elliot Brookbanks came second by three and a half lengths on Up To Scratch who ran a great race on his seasonal debut and Braepark finished third under Max Johnson.

Jacqueline followed up immediately in the AGA Ladies Open on Roll The Dice who was recording his first win of the campaign. Oaklands Bobby and Amy Waugh were in front from the start and the 14 year old looked a picture on his seasonal debut, however he was just pegged back on the run in by Roll The Dice who won by three lengths. Cherry Coward reported that the horse has settled into his training regime, "he's just altered in the last month and really come to himself, he's settled into a routine, chilled out and is enjoying life!" Drill Sergeant and Emma Horner-Harker finished in third.

Jack Andrews rode his first winner on only his third attempt by taking the Teeside Audi Hunt race on Seeyouincourt. The pair were always prominent and lead on the uphill run in. The 16 year old is the amateur whipper in for the Hurworth Hunt and has progressed through the Hurworth pony club. "We got him in Ireland last year, I've whipped in on him a little bit but he's a very good all rounder," said the jubilant jockey. Rosie Du Berlais finished in second under Elliot Brookbanks with the Sundae Best and Lucy Bell coming home in third.

Only five went to post for the Max Europe Ltd Mens Open Race and the field remained tightly grouped but it was Hurraboru that landed the spoils under Joe Wright by half a length from Things Change and Will Easterby in second with Sea Scout and John Dawson finishing in third.

Novice riders took advantage of the conditions of the WM McIvor & Son Club race to finish first and second. Jockeys who are not novice riders had to carry a 5lb penalty and it was the Sean Murray partnered Harris that flew up the run in to snatch victory from Nosecond Chance and Harry Carlisle by one and a half lengths. Lortzing finished third under John Dawson. "He pulled up on his last five starts under rules as he just wasn't enjoying the game," explained the winning trainer and jockey. The change of scenery has done him good and I've sweetened him up by turning him out with his pal Opera Og as much as I can."

The Tees Valley Mitsubishi Open Maiden Race had the most runners of the day with nine going to post and it went the way of Raw Condition under new pilot Max Johnson. The pair were positioned handily in third throughout until taking it up three out and winning by two lengths. Blue Lodge who had been held up was put into the race with just under a circuit to go and looked the winner until passed by Raw Condition, however his rider unfortunately took the wrong course leading to disqualification which promoted Riddle Me This and Philip Greaves into third. Cousin Guillame had just come to challenge when he fell three out and could be one to watch next time.

The Easter weekend sees a double header of point-to-points with the Badsworth and Bramham meeting taking place at Askham Bryan College on Saturday 26th April and the Staintondale at Charm Park on Easter Monday.
