Pendle Forest and Craven at Heslaker
Saturday 30th April 2016

by Charlotte Russell

Although low on entries there were a good number of runners at the Pendle Forest & Craven Point-to-Point on Saturday.

There were two charity flat races run in aid of the Candlelighters before the point-to-points races began and 19 participants had raised £250 each in order to take part. Following a delay to racing due the failure of an ambulance to turn up proceedings got underway with the Barnfield Construction Yorkshire Area Point-to-Point Club Members race and nine runners went to post over the shorter distance of 2m4f.

Twentypoundluck partnered by owner, trainer Paul Collins took a keen hold and made the running with Unwanted Gift and Follow the Pals handy. The field remained tightly bunched until the final circuit when the runners started to spread out a little and going up the hill, Locked Inthepocket went into the lead for Henry Morsehead, however over the last Twentypoundluck was galvanised and raced back into the lead to take this with Locked Inthepocket in second and Grouse Lodge a fast finishing third for Will Easterby.

Six of the seven runners were declared for the Subaru Restricted race but Asheanymoney was withdrawn as, following the delays, his rider Jacqueline Coward had to make the journey to Hexham for the Heart of All England Hunter Chase in which she finished third on The Highlander. Hi Ho Julio made the running with Duke Nelson and Blue Bertie close up and on the final circuit it looked like it was still anyone's race. Duke Nelson was sent into the lead before the ditch but following a perfect jump, slipped and came down. According To Dan was close behind and took the advantage, asserting down the hill for Tom Strawson to win easily from Jerusalem Bells under Will Easterby with Hi Ho Julio and John Dawson coming home in third.

Only three went to post for the Branded Solutions Tom Bannister Ladies Open race but Jaunty Journey crashed out at the first fence, interfering with Chip N Pin who was ridden by Jess Gillam, giving Shannon Silver a 20 length advantage. Chip N Pin could never get back on terms and the order remained the same with Joanna Walton keeping hold of her advantage.

All five ran in the Mercerprint Open Maiden Race and runners were quickly well strung out, however it was a one-two for the Mary Sowersby yard as Harmonical, ridden by John Dawson beat the Richard Smith partnered Dibble Bridge. Dollar Mick who had made the early running finished in third for Tom Greenwood.

The Pendle Forest & Craven Hunt Members race was sponsored by the Coniston Hotel Country Estate & Spa and was a match between Michael Bannister's pair of My Old Piano and Sportingfriendship and it was the old warrior My Old Piano who made light of his 5lb penalty and took this under William Easterby from the Henry Morsehead partnered Sportingfriendship.

In the Trust 4 Business Yorkshire Area Point-to-Point Club Members Race for novice and veteran riders a field of six went to post but Taruma, nearly refused to race giving the rest of the field at least a 30 length start. Mister Splodge took the early lead with Deise Dynamo and Botany Cove in close pursuit, however it was Niki Royale that came through under David O'Brien to take this very easily from the Stephen Cook owned, trained and ridden Deise Dynamo with Botany Cove ridden by Jack Andrews in third.
