Sinnington
Duncombe Park
Sunday 15th February 2015
by Charlotte Russell

An excellent day's racing took place at Duncombe Park on Sunday 15th February as the Sinnington Hunt celebrated their 40th anniversary at the Helmsley venue. Racing started with the Campbell & Penty Ltd Hunt members race, which was a match between last year's winner John Dillon and the second, Zitenka, but the positions were reversed yesterday and this provided William Easterby with the first leg of a double on the day.

There were lots of runners throughout the day and Savills Confined Hunts Race was no exception. 12 entries went to post and Botany Cove lead for much of the race under Jacqueline Coward, however it was Roycano, who had been held up last, Harry Bannisters preferred manner of riding, who came through to take the lead on the final bend and win by eight lengths from Botany Cove. Kings Lodge was two and a half lengths back in third for William Easterby and Max My Boy finished fourth for Russell Lindsay.

Will Milburn won the Subaru Restricted Race on 'Six Aside', trained by his girlfriend Emma Todd. The 10-1 shot was enjoying his first run of the season. Paul Tunnicliffe, Managing Director of Subaru UK presented the jubilant owners of 'Six Aside', Colin Milburn and Peter Kench with their trophies. Emma Todd finished second by five lengths on Ruby Bay and Baileys Benchmark was third under Harry Kinder who was having his second ride. All three jockeys work for Mark Walford.

The team from local York based dealership, Turnbulls Subaru were present displaying an extensive range of current Subaru vehicles, including the new Outback model that was well received by the Duncombe Park crowd. Subaru are new national sponsors for 2015 and the first three past the post qualified for the Subaru Restricted Point-to-Point Series Final at Stratford on 29th May. The next qualifier in the Subaru Restricted series is at Cocklebarrow in Gloucestershire for the re-scheduled South Midlands Area Club on Sunday 1st March.

The Mixed open was sponsored by Browns of York and William Easterby took the spoils aboard Camden. Royal Deal ran in similar fashion to his Sheriff Hutton outing and stayed with the field more than he had last season. He ran on but couldn't quite get on terms with the winner and was two and a half lengths further back under Joanna Mason. Young Hurricane finished third for Richard Tierney, with Ganbei and Harry Bannister in fourth.

Only novice riders turned out for The Jim Clare Memorial Six Year Olds and Over PPORA Club Members Race for Veteran and Novice riders. This race was sponsored by Malton Marquees, which is rather fitting as Jim Clare used to ride point-to-pointers for the owner Andy Nicholls. This race provided the closest finish of the day where the traveller, Millers Reef took the spoils under Tommie O'Brien. Opera Og had been dropped out and came like a train but was just given a bit too much to do by Sean Murray and was beaten a head. Last year's winner Trop fort was three lengths further back under Sally Coates and Radio Nowhere was fourth for Emma Chaston.

The Maiden Race had been split at entry stage and the first division was sponsored by JM Finn & Co. Shantou Prince landed the spoils on his first run of the season under Christy Furness. The winner was quite impressive, taking this race by 15 lengths from Banderitos and William Easterby who keeps improving and can pick up a maiden race this season. Peter Beaumont's homebred Shannon Silver was a length and a half further back in third under his grandson Henry Morsehead.

Division Two was run in the same time as the first and was sponsored by Haxton Developments Ltd. Comedinewithme took this in good fashion under Joanna Mason. The pair had finished a very close second two weeks previously and Joanna felt that she had jumped greenly that day and would improve for the run. Aldreth was a neck further back in second for Harry Bannister and Knightofthegarter showed a big improvement on his debut to finish third by 15 lengths. A quick course is likely to suit this flat bred five year old and he should figure over an easy three miles.
