Sam Allwood rode the 50th winner of his career – 45 in points, five under rules – on Karshaan in the opener at Badbury Rings on Sunday. Always prominent, the eight-year-old led at the third last and impressively quickened 12 lengths clear of his 10 rivals. "It was a bit sticky when he finished third at Chipley Park, but he's jumped better today on the better ground", felt Bradford Peverell's Fiona Shaw, whose husband Peter trains the gelding for his greyhound racing loving syndicate of owners "The Gone To The Dogs Partnership".
Jayne's Crusader, trained by Sally Alner for Percy and Anne Tory and Diana Dampney, was a popular winner of the Men's Open. Michael Miller made his move at the third last and soon had the race in safekeeping, although the eight-year-old did get in close to the final fence.
Emily MacMahon was in double form on Miss Midnight (Ladies Open) and Citizens Arrest (Restricted). The former led from the cross fence and held Chloe Boxall's persistent challenge on Armoury House. "That's twice Emily has ridden Miss Midnight and twice they've won", revealed Thornicombe handler Mary Tory, who trains the mare for John and Greer Norman. Emily adopted similar tactics on Citizens Arrest, who is trained by Tim Billington for his stepson Nolan Byrne. Tim has four pointers in training but is more familiar to racegoers as head of the Pangfield Partners – their Hughie Morrison-trained Cill Rialaig won the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot last summer.
The Open Maiden was divided at scale. Polly Gundry reached the 299 career point-to-point winner mark on Classical Rocker in Division 1, which finished in a torrential hailstorm. "She made big mistakes at the fourth and third last and was headed on the run-in, but she's brave", said the eight-time Champion. Merry Terry and Robbie Henderson were impressive and popular winners of Division 2 for Sherborne owner-trainers Richard and Ruth Dimond, who lost their prolific Joe Lively at Cheltenham on New Year's Day. "Merry Terry has strengthened enormously and must have improved 2 stone since last season", beamed the rider, who was eager to praise his partner.
Barneys Mate and his jockey Harry Derham both reached the three-winner mark for the season with a facile Novice Riders race success, and the pair can run up an extended sequence in similar contests throughout the season.
