Banwen Miners
Pentreclwydau
Bank Holiday Monday 4th May 2009
by Brian Lee

A four-timer at the Banwen Miners' meeting at Pentreclwydau put reigning Welsh champion Rhys Hughes-who was trailing the young pretender John Mathais - back in with a good chance of retaining his title. He has now ridden 16 winners to Mathias's 15. However,it should be noted that riders also gain points for finishing either second or third.

Rhys was successful on Overlut (Members), Bob Bites Back (men's open), Micks Prospect (restricted) and Doctor Supremo (intermediate).

Overlut won by a distance from Treasured Coin, Bob Bites Back brought his season's total of wins to six-which included the Dunraven Bowl at Chepstow-when beating Lady Myfanwy by two lengths with the pacemaking Its Definite a further three lengths back in third, Micks Prospect scored by eight lengths from Running Word, a winner of the maiden at the Llangeinor two days earlier, and Doctor Supremo won by a distance from Banbury Babe.

In the confined, John Mathias on Up The Boreen looked to have the race won when Lord Of The Turf, backed from 10-1 to 6-4 joint-favourite, and who had been disputing the lead up until then, fell at the second last and sadly shattered a shoulder.

Jodie Hughes riding Steve Hughes's (no relation) homebred Colorado Storm won the maiden by six lengths from the favourite Canndar and Beth Roberts's Chesnut Annie, under usual pilot Isabel Tompsett, made it ten wins out of ten runs this season when making every post a winning one in the three horse ladies' open coming home a street ahead of Howdydoody. The last Welsh horse to win ten ladies' open races in a season, if my memory serves me right, was Handsome Harvey during the 1990s.
