Rhys Hughes, head amateur at Evan Williams's Llancarfan yard, was in brilliant form at the Glamorgan Hunt Steeplechases last Saturday landing a double with Kilbreena (intermediate) and Misty Gem restricted). Both horses are trained by Swansea hairdresser Robert Scrine.
The well-backed Kilbreena came home 20 lengths clear of Lady Myfanwy and Misty Gem, a £500 bargain buy, held on by three parts of a length from Another Alliance.
The American-bred Titchfield was a shock 25-1 winner of the mixed open under 18-year-old Kyle Yates from Fishguard. Yates, who is attached to leading National Hunt trainer Alan King's stable, took up the running two fences out to score by three lengths from the joint-favourites Bobosh and Khatani.
Jodie Hughes, 23 won the confined on Longstone Boy who came home ten lengths clear of Gray Knight. Longstone Boy is owned and trained by Pembrokeshire's Eric Clough and the sprightly fifteen-year-old, a winner of two hunter chases at Leicester and Ludlow, was winning for the eleventh time and on four of these occasions Jodie has been in the saddle.
Chris Powell, who celebrates his 21st birthday tomorrow (Wednesday), rode his first winner in just his second ride when landing the young horse maiden on Robert Williams's Merthyrmawr who got up on the run-in to beat Billy Lane by one-and-a-half lengths. Chris from Ogmore is another jockey who rides out for Evan Williams.
The aged maiden went to Redhouse Chevalier who, well ridden by his seventeen-year-old trainer Luke Price, won by 25 lengths from Wareyth.
Meanwhile, I recently interviewed a winning lady rider and was surprised, if not entirely shocked, when she peppered her post race comments with the dreaded F word.
Call me old fashioned if you like but I really think it’s uncalled for and in more than 40 years of reporting on the sport, it was the first time that I can remember a rider- male or female - using that word when being interviewed. The sport has certainly changed over the years and not always for the better.
Young horse maiden: Merthyrmawr (Chis Powell) 6-1
Aged horse maiden: Redhouse Chevalier ( Luke Price) 10-1
Confined: Longstone Boy (Jodi Hughes) 2-1
Mixed Open: Titchfield (Kyle Yates) 25-1
Intermediate: Kilbreena (Rhys Hughes) 3-1
Restricted: Misty Gem (Rhys Hughes) evens fav.
