Modbury Harriers
Flete Park

GREY Ciseaux relished the trip at Flete Park
on Saturday to land the George Baskerville Memorial Ladies’
Open run over four miles.
His owner/trainer Lucy Gardner said some
times he is in the mood, and others he says “no” but
after a season of consistent performances the grey gelding deserved
his success after sticking his nose out to gain victory by a neck
from Ardross Gem.
Lucy, who was nursing a swollen faces and
multiple bruises after a crashing fall on Bank Holiday Monday, also
reported her other stable star, Tsar’s Twist who had won
hunter chase at Ludlow, may head for the Intermediate Final at
Exeter racecourse next week.
Racing got off to a shaky start at the
idyllic location after the paramedics had double booked themselves,
but at the last minute a second crew stepped in and the action got
under way an hour late.
Dun and Doras, trained at Buckfastleigh by
Nikki Frost, found the opening confined race a cinch after winning
easily under Derek McKenna following a match with My Whisper. The
gelding is a former winner under Rules and is owned by the Cloud
Nine – Premier Cru syndicate.
Nikki was in treble form, taking the
two-runner men’s open with Jalons Star, ridden by his usual
partner Ben Robarts, and the concluding race of the day, the
maiden, when 18-year-old Byron Moorcroft, who was scoring the
second win of his career, got up to score on Howdy Cloud. Owner
Jimmy Frost said the horse is a reformed bucking bronco and had run
very green at the course last time on his racing debut.
Buckets Awl’s restricted win put
trainer Alan Walter on level terms with Monique Pike who drew a
blank with her runners over the weekend. The two families embark on
a challenge each year for the silver bucket, awarded to the one who
trains the most winners, whether under Rules or in a point-to-point
and the gelding is named after the awad - Awl stands for Alan
Walter Limited.
Bucket Awl was odds on to land the race under
Richard Woollacott and kept up to his work well to finish four
lengths ahead of Richard Darke and Katies Hero.
Alice Mills won the intermediate race, by
virtue of a walkover with Gunners Mistake, and the win earned her
the perpetual challenge trophy for the leading novice rider over
the two meetings staged at Flete.
The Pegasus Club Race is one of the oldest in
the country, having first run in 1895, and Mark Treneer’s
Itworked was the two and a half length winner under Mary McCarthy.
The race is confined to members’ of the legal profession and
four runners went to post including two trained by Jessie Spur who
had travelled down from Berkely country.
