TIVERTON FOXHOUNDS
CHIPLEY PARK
6th February 2005
by Lee Glanville

A record crowd enjoyed eight competitive races at Chipley Park near Tiverton on Sunday where Mike Miller’s double earned him the leading rider award.

The amateur’s first win came aboard John Boulter and Fern Wilkins’ Cantenac Brown in the intermediate. The gelding has had a catalogue of disasters including a broken bone in his hind leg as a six-year-old and sarcoids on his neck which kept him on the sidelines for a season until this year.

By John Boulter’s own admission, the ten-year-old isn’t very quick, but stamina is his forte, an essential requirement up the course’s long run for home, and the gelding kept up to his work well to win by five lengths.

Miller was back in the winners enclosure again after Mister Swallow, trained by his father, the former champion point-to-point rider Richard, won the restricted. The gelding was bought at Doncaster Sales as a four-year-old and his wayward tendencies meant he had to be rebroken.

Thirteen went to post in the mixed open and it was Perkys Pride who rallied well under Charlotte Tizzard on the run-in to claim victory. The gelding’s racing ability has proved a bonus for his owner Tracy Williams who originally bought the David Pipe cast-off as a hack. But the nine-year-old proved so full of life that after a summer of road work trainer Alan Tizzard, Tracy’s friend and neighbour, suggested he should come into training. "He’s the first pointer I have owned and I ride him myself every morning," she said.

The race saw the debut ride of leading trainer Philip Hobbs’ daughter Katherine, 18, who finished fourth on Simber Hill. Two rides later she booted Saint Romble clear with a circuit to go in the PPORA race to record her first ever victory. Hobbs admitted watching his daughter ride was far more nerve wracking than sending out a winner of the Champion Hurdle and added that the horse was in fact a two miler under Rules and he didn’t think he would stay the trip.

The maiden was divided into three divisions and most impressive winner of the day was the Jamie Tuck-trained Flora Poste who looks well up to adding to this victory. The Alflora mare, ridden by decent amateur Adrian Wintle, jumped the last well and won pulling away from the rest of the field. Tuck said the mare hadn’t been quite good enough under Rules for his father John, who trains and farms the land where the Beaufort run their point-to-point.

Pirandello Due looked lucky to win the first division after leader Four In Hand, owned by local Mary Sanderson who had seen Jabiru beaten by Ballysicyos in the members’, brought down Bilton’s Nap at the last leaving Carol Stainer’s winner, ridden by Zoe Lilly, and Highway Robbery to battle it out in front.

The concluding division went to Manhunter, who is owned by 18 members of the Criw Preseli in Wales and is trained John Moore in Wales. The ex Peter Bowen-trained horse was Tim Vaughan’s first ever winner at the course.
