Ashley Farrant rode four winners at
the East Cornwall Point to Point at Great Trethew on Sunday, three
of them for David Pipe and one that he trained
himself.
Dry weather meant fast going on the hilly track, and, although there were plenty of runners, several horses stayed in their boxes as the ground dried out even further during the day due to the bitterly cold wind. Secretary Elizabeth Martin said: "Luckily the sunshine brought out the crowds and we very nearly ran out of racecards. The races were run at speed due to the fast ground which we don't often get at Great Trethew." Farrant's four didn't get under way until the sixth race when Oneminutetofive outclassed his rivals in the Land Rover Men's Open. Only Shobrooke Mill finished within sight of the winner, most of the other seven runners unable to keep up the pace. Farrant then ripped through the card in the last three races. He took the Intermediate on Canterbury Jack, a race in which Teninarow (Richard Darke) proved himself as he had the smart Little Native (Polly Gundry) back in third - a close finish despite there only being three runners. He followed up in the first division
of the Restricted, squeezing Cimmaroon home by a neck from Edward
Retter's Bishops Blade ridden by Sarah Gaisford, and finished the
day with a win on a horse he trains himself, Just Sally, in There was a class performance from Paul Nicholls' Mister Benjamin in the Ladies' race under trainer Chloe Roddick who swept past Paul Tyler's Guru Rinpoche (Lucy Gardner) in the closing stages. Both the runner up and third placed Lirsleftover (Sue Young) performed well but were 10 lengths adrift of the winner. Sue Young had started the day with a victory in the members' race on board Fossy Bear. Second-place went to a horse having its first run, Little Rosie (Dawn Mitchell), for Bob and Jill Stephenson. Liam Heard got off the mark for the season on George's Pleasure in the first division of the 2m5f maiden. Winner of the second division was Richard Barber's only runner at the meeting due to the ground, but looks a really smart horse - Spot the Business partnered by Polly Gundry. There was also a first win of the season for Andrew Glassonbury who took the older horses maiden on Commanche Summer by a head from Richard Woollacott on Cappa Hill.
