Bilsdale at Easingwold
Sunday 13th May 2018
by Will Milburn

Sunday's meeting at Easingwold was staged by the York and Ainsty and saw some exciting young horses turn out courtesy of Peter Fahey who recorded a double on the day as a trainer. The theme continued as Billy Garrity went on to score twice, along with Lottie Crane and trainer Guy Brewer who saw his talented Young Hurricane bounce back to form.

Peter Fahey took both divisions of the Open Maiden - In Division One it was the turn of Barfly, piloted by Jack Teal. The son of Fair Mix was never far away and Teal drove his mount out after the last and ran on well to run out an impressive winner. Barfly was having his second start at the age of 4 with his first run coming in a point to point bumper at Alnwick, this was an impressive transition to fences and will no doubt be a decent prospect for the future. Peter, whose sole win as a jockey came last year when he steered Station Master to victory has since turned his hand to training with a great success, as he went on to win the Aintree Point to Point bumper with the talented Station Master. Aumit Hill chased the winner home under Sam Burton and a win should be a formality for him whilst Bellringer flew home from the back under Phil Greaves.

Division Two again went to another 4yo, but this time it was the turn of Billy Garrity who steered Do It For Thy Sen to victory, again for Peter Fahey. The pair made good progress throughout the race and despite looking green turning in to the home straight, his ability shone through as he battled on towards the line to win with a bit in hand. A well bred son of Mountain High who like his stable-mate was having only his second run after showing much promise at the Sinnington meeting, the pair will now likely head to Doncaster's May sale next week and being from the family of useful pointer and national hunt performer Always Right, is likely to sell well, "They look two nice horses, they both ran fairly green and will come on a ton for the run and both appreciated the better ground… both are in at Doncaster next week" said Peter. Emory and John Dawson chased the winner all the way to the line and Peaky, a 4yo brother to the Coward's useful On Holiday, showed his first signs of form in third.

Billy Garrity began his double in the second, the Conditions race where he steered Refusal to victory for trainer Guy Brewer. The pair made most of the running and galloped on well to beat Tasheba and Amy Collier in second. Despite his age of 10, he's in the form of his life, making it three wins on the bounce this season and Guy put it down to his wind,"He's had a wind operation and it's really helped him this season… I wish we'd done it sooner now" laughed Guy. Third place went to the Mobile Man who was possibly unsuited by the rain softened ground.

Brewer went on to complete his training double in the Men's Open with last years Horse and Hound Cup winner Young Hurricane, this time partnered by John Dawson. The pair waited in rear and made a move three out, staying on strongly to hold off the pair of challengers, Roll The Dice under Jack Andrews and Six A Side partnered by Will Milburn. Young Hurricane had failed to show anywhere near last years form this time around, however Guy was hopeful of a good run, "He seemed to be coming back to himself this week so we were hopeful!" said Guy who has no firm plans at the minute for his charge but could progress further now.

Lottie Crane was another to go and double up on the day. Her first win came in the Ladies Open with her useful Knocklong, trained by Justin Landy. Knocklong was waited with until making good headway half way around, the pair then ran on well to win with plenty in hand after the last and beat a running on Nosecondchance and Kate Lowcock with Becky Smith, who was making a rare appearance between the flags and currently contests the lead in the national hunt amateur title , back in third under Notnowsam.

Lottie completed her double in the Restricted with Inishturk Lad ,who bounced back to form, improving from his third place here last time. The pair made good progress throughout the race and were two lengths down at the last, however a last fence blunder from Wild Murphy gifted the lead to the winner and although Wild Murphy battled hard, he went down narrowly - a victory should surely be within his grasp and McMurphy was back in third under Jack Teal. "He's had three years off the track so needed a few runs to get back… we think he's talented and next year will be his year." said Lottie of her mount and is confident he can improve further.

The opening race , the Hunt Members, saw a relatively easy success from Stagecoach Jasper and Chris Dawson, the pair making most of the running, staying on well to fend off his only challenger, Little Big Town under Phil Greaves.
