Going.
Good, Soft in places Mosshouses
Farm in the hills near Galashiels provided a spectacular setting for this
week’s Northern point-to-point meeting. Phyllis
Claxton provided the highlight of the meeting with a double from Dun
Victory and Dun Rose. She owns, trains and bred both horses. They are out
of the brilliant mare Dun Gray Lass who was most unlucky not to win the
Cheltenham Foxhunters chase some years ago.
A fantastic achievement, which exemplifies what Point to Point
racing is all about. The
meeting opened with an easy victory for the favourite Laganside in the
Members Race who was ridden by his owner James Muir. They made all and
came home a distance clear from the only other finisher Planet Ireland. The
Intermediate race produced an exciting finish, which saw Dun Victory win
by a short head from Princess Derry.
Princess Derry kicked clear along the back straight but Tom Oates
brought Dun Victory with a perfectly timed challenge to join issue at the
last and then gain the upper hand in a driving finish. Passing
Danger appeared to have the Ladies Race in safe keeping when he pulled
several lengths clear of Running Mute approaching the third last. However
Jane Hollands and Running Mute were not to be denied and they rallied to
take up the running after the last and eventually win by 2 lengths. It
was a similar story in the next as the favourite Polyphon was in the lead
and seemingly going best coming down the hill towards 3 out. However he
was eventually outstayed by the Luke Morgan ridden Sharpaman who had 3
lengths to spare at the line. The
Men’s open saw a return to form for Dun Rose who has been off colour
recently. Ridden by Kevin Anderson the mare took up the running from
Tursal approaching the third last and then ran on well to score by 5
lengths. Both
Maidens were won by a distance. In the first Alittlebitopower jumped well from the front for Clive Storey and won impressively from Beyond Hope and the strong finishing Highland Island. Both the second and third ran promising races and could be worth keeping an eye on as the season draws to a close. In
the second Marteeny stayed on strongly for Jimmy Walton to win going away
from Rainha. Rainha is progressing with experience and could pick up a
maiden before the end of the season. Next
weeks meeting is at Aspatria in Cumbria.
First race 2.00pm.
